Here are some well-being tips for your furry pal!
ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR VETERINARIAN WITH YOUR QUESTIONS!
Just as a well-balanced diet is essential for us humans, its extremely important for your dog. Ensuring your pups diet is a healthy one is important for all stages of his or her life. What you feed them now, can affect them when they get older. From meats to sofa cushions, your dog can and probably will eat it. They aren't too good at choosing the best, most nutritional food (or slippers) there is to offer. The fact is that a lot of dog foods are fairly generic in their contents, and are loaded a lot of corn, when at other grain byproducts. To be 100% honest, the last thing you need to be looking at when choosing a food for your pet is price. Stick to foods that are made here in the good ol USA. The FDA does regulate these foods too!
We all know that dogs have a TON of energy, and we all know that they NEED to let it out or they will get in trouble. If you've ever had a kid- or have ever been a kid- or have ever seen a kid, then you'd know this is true for humans as well. Especially in their younger years, dogs will run, jump, and play for hours on end if you let them. This is a good thing. Unfortunately, for some pet owners, it could be an inconvenience. Thats why, when deciding to get an animal, the physical maintenance of owning him or her NEEDS to be addressed. Dogs NEED regular exercise, period. Not only to maintain a healthy weight, and promote a healthy cardiovascular system, but it'll also boost his mental well being. As a dog owner, you know when they know they've done something wrong. You can tell when he's embarrassed. Your dog just wants to love you, LET THEM!! Regular exercise for a senior dog is also crucial, although, not as vigorous as when they were younger, but short and often play-times are recommended. Regular exercise for an adult dog will help maintain brain and thought function, as well as keeping their joints healthy.
A HEALTHY WEIGHT:
Fat dogs are funny to look at... but seriously, its unhealthy and can lead to a number of diseases and ailments such as arthritis and even diabetes. A combination of a good diet and regular exercise will keep you pooch trim and fit. Avoid indulging them with high caloric treats if possible. Especially if your not exercising them as often as you know you should. Dog will eat nearly anything; try veggies, or slice up a banana or perhaps an apple! Whatever you feed them, I can nearly promise you they'll prefer love and affection as a reward.
Your dog loves you. And chances are you love your dog. Your dog hates it when you have to leave, but LOVES it when you come home! Your pooch craves your attention and you should spend quality time with them everyday. Showing your dog attention reinforces to them that they are part of a family. While dogs have a pack instinct, not all dogs require to be the leader. Its imperative that you become the pack leader, or your dog will. Someone has to be the leader. With the proper attention and affection given, your k-9 companion will be loyal, and devout friend for years to come.
SPAYING AND NEUTERING:
Some of us hate the thought of this. But, a little forethought about this can save your pets life (also, it will make your life easier). Neutering your male dog can have many social benefits including: Less aggressiveness, reducing his sexual behaviors, reducing his tendency to 'mark' areas, also prevents cancers, and other male disorders. A male dog can smell a female dog in heat a mile away... literally. Don't run the chance of him jumping the fence and getting hit by a car in search for his cross-town lover. Consult your vet for the age of proper neutering and spaying for females.
Spaying a female dog can also have its advantages... for example: Male dogs wont freak out and climb all over your princess. Spaying prevents unwanted pregnancies. Dogs in heat leave messes... although its natural... yuk! And don't think you can just leave her in the backyard... An over aggressive male dog will crawl under, around or even scale a fence to get to her. Which can lead to an unwanted litter.
